Belgium is a quaint state in Western Europe that is a must visit for any person who loves to travel. Its world famous renaissance architecture, delicious cuisine, medieval towns and rolling hills is haven for a weary traveller. Brussels is the capital city of Belgium and its official languages are French, Dutch and German. This article provides a brief look into the major attractions in Belgium.
MEUSE VALLEY:
This river valley is a major tourist attraction. The lush countryside of Belgium with its rolling hills can be best experienced at this place. The scenery is picturesque and the locales right out of a story book and the area also resembles a painting in its beauty and quiet stillness. Hiking and cycling are the major options for recreation here but just being in a locale with this amount of serenity is recreation in itself.
GRAND PLACE IN ANTWERP:
This place called Grand Place or Grote Markt is the central point of Brussels bordered by the grand guildhalls, the city Town hall and the building that is home to the lovely Museum of Brussels. This place is a UNESCO World heritage site. The most enticing thing about this place is the Flower carpet. This place, every couple of years, allows a huge carpet of flowers, mostly begonias to be set up. More than a million begonias are used and this beautiful carpet extends to over 1800 square metres. This flower carpet was first seen in the year 1971, but due to its sheer beauty and fame, it continued on as a tradition. Millions of tourists flock here to witness this beautiful sight.
ST. PETERS CHURCH, LEUVEN:
This world famous church is built on the main market square and is situated across the Town hall. It is believed that this beautiful work of architecture was built in the fifteenth century and stood through both the World Wars. The church is a fine example of Belgian culture and art. It is also home to few of the best paintings in the history of the world and they have also been preserved beautifully in a prime condition. A few among these paintings are the Last Supper, Martyrdom of St. Erasmus preserved from as early as the year 1464.
WATERLOO:
Many of us must have heard about this great battle of Waterloo where the great Napoleon Bonaparte was finally met his end. Napoleon Bonaparte was a French leader who rose to fame during the French revolution. This great ruler was defeated in battle in a war that was called the Battle of Waterloo in the year 1815. Any person who is a history buff will find this place interesting as it was one of the turning points in history.
